About Us
Established in 1972, SELCAS - South East Livingston County Ambulance Service, Inc. - is a not-for-profit Illinois Corporation based out of Fairbury, Illinois.
We offer Emergency 911 ambulance service for portions of Livingston and McClean counties, and non-emergency transfers on a case-by-case basis.
SELCAS runs about 900 - 950 transports per year, with the majority of those runs being 911 responses. Besides serving our local area, we do specialty transports to the Carle Pavilion in Champaign, and an occasional transfer based on special requests.
We currently have 4 ALS Ambulances. We currently have eight full time people, with a total of 39 crew members on the roster. SELCAS recently had 3 EMT-Intermediates upgrade to the Paramedic level. Our staff is essentially full-time during the weekdays, and "volunteer" on nights and weekends. This helps minimize the burden on area taxpayers. We pride ourselves in having among the lowest transport rates in the area!
SELCAS also owns a van which is at the disposal of the Livingston County Coroner for transports to area morgues. We have occasionally used this van to provide transports for area funeral homes as well.

SELCAS History & Humble Thanks
Dear Friends & Neighbors -
Here is a little history about SELCAS to share the organization's continuous concern to be good stewards of the public's ongoing generous donations.
As a non-profit organization, while dependent on community support, SELCAS is under regulations and requirements mandated by the State of Illinois which most often are not funded. SELCAS must continuously raise funds to maintain compliance and pay for required upgrades. Our communities have a wonderful history of generously supporting SELCAS, enabling us to provide the quality service for which we strive every day.
In December, 1972, SELCAS began the service in the old "carriage house" located by Fairbury Hospital with a volunteer staff and a volunteer Board of Directors. In 1985, a fundraiser helped raise funds for additional space - a new ambulance garage. At that time, SELCAS had an old funeral home station wagon ambulance and two old van ambulances. The next year, a new modular ambulance was purchased. Additional capabilities and requirements made the need for the larger modular ambulances as a necessity.
In 2013, with four ambulance, one housed in an unheated building offsite, and the specialty van sitting outside, it was again time for more space! The "day room" for the crews also doubled as the area for training, and crews who stayed overnight. This location was pretty much land-locked, and a building addition would have been too small for the needs of the growing service.
The State of Illinois mandates are outside of SELCAS' control, and during this time, the ambulance service was forced to convert to the Paramedic level. A new building was out of the question without fundraisers, grants, donations, etc. The public was unbelievably supportive of the cause with donations, memorials, and fantastic support for the pancake and sausage breakfasts, and golf cart raffles. In 2014, with enough donated funds to pay for it, construction of the new building began, and in 2015 SELCAS moved into their new quarters. The structure, known as "The Brian J Munz Safety Complex", is actually two buildings. The Fairbury Fire Department occupies the west building, and SELCAS the east building. The two buildings are joined at the center, by a common wall, but remain completely seperate.
As time goes on, new requirements keep coming down the line, almost always with no money to pay for the changes except from private donations. Even with outstanding, generous individual support from the community, SELCAS would not be able to function without property tax monies which help bring the service back towards the break-even point each year.
As we write this, we humbly thank everyone that remembers SELCAS with donations, memorials, grain donations, and also attending the pancake and sausage breakfast on Easter weekend. Our team at SELCAS strives hard to be worthy of the public's generosity as we work to continue to provide the best service at a reasonable price.
Sincerely,
Jim & Donita Hargitt & the SELCAS team
